Recycled Steel Paint Cans Stay Out of Landfills, Make Money
It is estimated that 5% of all paint purchased remains unused. That means that 95% of the empty paint cans usually end up in landfills. Most of those paint containers are made of steel and currently cost a bundle to be disposed. A better way is to have those cans crushed and sold as valuable scrap metal.
The NCPD has a plan that proposes to strategically locate can crushers, both by geographical area and by population centers in order to facilitate the collection of steel paint cans. After these crushers are located, consumers and painting contractors would be encouraged to recycle their empty paint cans, but not charged for the recycling.
As mentioned earlier, the future is bright for the likelihood that paint cans will be constructed from plastic mixed with post consumer paint. Then, the recycling of any leftover paint would not require the emptying of remaining latex paint from the can. One could simply dump the entire unit of paint into the recycling blender. Think of the cost savings! This is the ultimate example of completing the symbolic recycling circle.
