Reduce Recycled Paint Transportation Costs by Hauling More Less Distance

The NCPD's collection and transportation system is designed to drive down the costs of transporting paint while driving up participation in paint recycling programs. This system reduces transportation costs by maximizing cargo space and increases recycling by making it more convenient and accessible to consumers, which has been a barrier in the past. The NCPD system does not require the use of forklifts or specialized equipment and eliminates the need for storage facilities. The NCPD system utilizes mobile as well as stationary collection sites for greater convenience and flexibility.

The current method of shipping recycled paint utilizes cubic yard boxes, known a Gaylords. These Gaylords are generally transported in tractor trailers that have, when fully loaded, 2' of non productive space in the width and 2 ½' of wasted space above. By not utilizing all the cargo room you end up transporting air over great distances. Furthermore forklift equipment is necessary in the loading and off loading process.

The National Council on Paint Disposition's transportation system utilizes recycled cargo containers along with spill containment trays to optimize the storage capacity while making it easy to load and off load the paint. These self storage containers can be placed at permanent collection sites or be placed on a trailer for greater mobility. A step van can be utilized where room is scarce at smaller sites and in downtown areas.
